Cyborg Chronicles, known in Japan as Kuroko's Quest (黒子の探求 Kuroko no Tankyū?) is a science fiction-action-adventure-comedy anime series produced by Sunrise.

Summary[]

The series follows the adventures of Kuroko Urashima, a spirited and temperamental cyborg girl, as she strives for freedom and acceptance in a world that often fears and misunderstands beings like her. After being kidnapped and modified by a mad scientist, Kuroko removes her control chip and destroys the laboratory, setting herself free. Living with her loving cyborg parents, Kenji (Great Supernova) and Gina (Mistress Silver), both retired superheroes, Kuroko seeks to find her place in the world while honing her newfound abilities. Alongside her older sister, Samira, who possesses the power to manipulate metals, they navigate the challenges of their unique existence. The main plot of the series revolves around Kuroko's quest to uncover the truth behind the scientist who experimented on her and her family. As they encounter various villains and face dangerous adversaries, Kuroko, Samira, and their parents must work together to protect themselves and discover the secrets of their past. Throughout their adventures, Kuroko's relationships with her family and friends will be tested, and she will learn valuable lessons about trust, loyalty, and the true meaning of acceptance. Along the way, she will encounter other cyborgs, both allies and enemies, who will further shape her understanding of her own identity and place in the world.

Characters[]

Main Characters[]

Kuroko is the main protagonist of the series. She is a young, tomboyish teenager who desires a sense of freedom but also wants acceptance from her peers. Despite mostly being cool-headed, serious, and friendly, Kuroko can be very hostile toward others. Ever since she became a cyborg woman, her horrible temper often gets the best of her and she gets easily angered. Nevertheless, she cares a lot about her friends, and feels deeply hurt when she is betrayed by them. She can be reckless and act without thinking sometimes, but can be serious when the need arises. She is feisty and excitable, and will stop at nothing to get her way. Kuroko possesses enhanced strength, agility, and combat skills due to her cyborg enhancements. She also has the ability to generate and manipulate energy blasts, which she can use for offensive attacks or defensive shields. Her combat abilities make her a formidable fighter. In action sequences, she engages in hand-to-hand combat, utilizing her martial arts expertise and energy blasts to take down opponents. Her energy manipulation skills can also be used for strategic purposes, such as disabling enemy technology or creating distractions.

  • Samira Urashima

Kuroko's older sister who was adopted from India. In contrast to Kuroko, she is a caring, warm, and fuzzy girl who loves animals and humanity. She loves to talk with others, but sometimes incapable of saying "no". She cares a lot about others, to the point of putting them first, and will do anything to help her friends. She has the power to manipulate metals, which she gained after being exposed to a strange meteorite. Samira is the only member of the Urashima family to remain fully human, as she is the only one who didn't get modified by Dr. Tezuka. Samira can control and shape metallic objects, including creating weapons or forming protective armor. Her metal manipulation abilities are used both defensively and offensively. She can create barriers or shields using nearby metal objects to protect herself and her family. In combat, she can fashion weapons from metal or immobilize foes by encasing them in metal constructs. Her abilities can also be used for problem-solving, such as unlocking doors or creating makeshift tools.

  • Gina Urashima/Mistress Silver

Kuroko and Samira's mother. She is a short but incredibly intimidating woman who often starts confrontations with others. She usually takes apparent pride in being a "simple, kind housewife" and calmly introduces herself as such to anyone who asks. Her humble exterior ironically belies a fearsome disposition though, with her daughters being terrified at the thought of aggravating her, such as when someone calls her "old": She is prone to swift acts of violence and dealing out physical harm, often seen cracking her knuckles when she is angry or wants to intimidate. However, despite her considerable aggressive nature, Gina is a remarkably warm, caring individual always willing to help those in need, especially children. Wise and perceptive, she is a great advocate of helping people to make their own way and will usually only intervene on behalf of those with the will—but not the means—to help themselves. Gina has the ability to generate and manipulate electromagnetic fields. She can create electromagnetic barriers, manipulate magnetic objects, and even harness electricity for offensive attacks. Gina's electromagnetic abilities provide her with defensive and offensive capabilities. She can create energy shields or force fields to protect herself and her family from physical and energy-based attacks. In combat, she can manipulate metallic objects using her magnetic powers, turning them into projectiles or restraining opponents. Additionally, her electricity manipulation can be used to deliver powerful electric shocks to enemies.

  • Kenji Urashima/Great Supernova

Kuroko and Samira's father. He lavishes on his daughters as much as he can, though he will not give in to them in an argument. He is a lot closer to Kuroko than he is to Samira, and he's the one Kuroko always goes to whenever she needs help from him. Kenji is also head of his own private security force, both assigned to him and Kuroko, though his seem to be the superior of the two. Despite being traditional enough to not need to, Kenji is an extremely strong kendo master. Kenji is a very strong, tactical leader, but said to be absolutely ruthless and cold-hearted. Like Kuroko, he has anger issues. Kenji possesses heightened reflexes and agility. He is skilled in various martial arts styles, including hand-to-hand combat and weapon mastery. His kendo expertise allows him to engage in close-quarters combat with finesse and precision. He can use his agility to evade attacks and deliver powerful strikes. His combat skills can be showcased in intense fight scenes, where he utilizes a combination of acrobatics, kendo techniques, and weapon proficiency to defeat adversaries.

Villains[]

  • Dr. Tezuka

Dr. Tezuka is the main antagonist of the series. He is an eccentric inventor who wishes world domination by turning people into cyborgs and using them as weapons of mass destruction. The first two humans he modified into cyborgs were Kenji and Gina, whom he captured while they were on a mission. However, his plan completely backfired when he modified their daughter Kuroko and she rebelled by destroying his lab, along with ambitions. He later stops from his plans in world domination and decides to live in a more peaceful way of living with Miku. He maintains a friendly rivalry with Kuroko and her family.

Supporting Characters[]

  • Miku Nonohara

Miku is a cyborg girl who was modified by Dr. Tezuka during his quest for world domination, until they abandoned their ambitions due to multiple clashes with Kuroko, who proclaims Miku as her rival. Miku is a lot kinder and more mature than Kuroko and will try to calm any situation, although she too can be angered when provoked. She is also very polite and always refers to people as "Mister" or "Miss". Being calm, she tends to go at her own pace more than others. She is concerned with shopping, her appearance, and her outfits, and perhaps because of this, she seems to be very popular among boys. She will stick to the people she loves and do anything to keep them safe. Miku is not always seen wearing a smile on her face, but she does crack jokes to cheer her friends up when they are sad. Essentially, in contrast to Kuroko, Miku has a cheerful and optimistic personality. She is so optimistic that she often reacts "a beat behind" to her surroundings. In other words, she's spontaneous but isn't straightforward due to her indecisiveness. She uses her powers for anything, but she mostly wants to help her friends as deep inside she is a generous and helpful girl. Although she might disagree with her friends, Miku is very supportive and protective and will not hesitate to help them. Miku possesses cybernetic modifications similar to the Urashimas, granting her enhanced strength, agility, and combat skills. Miku utilizes her cyborg abilities to assist her friends and protect them from harm. Her abilities include enhanced strength and agility, energy projection, adaptive camouflage, technological interface, regenerative healing, hyper-senses, and weapon integration.

Kuroko's maternal cousin from Puerto Rico. Unlike his temperamental cousin, he tends to have a calm and relaxed outlook on life, rarely getting worked up or angered easily. Julio is known for his friendly and approachable nature, often making others feel comfortable in his presence. He possesses a great sense of humor and enjoys making people laugh with his witty remarks. Unlike Kuroko, Julio tends to be more patient and understanding, seeking to find common ground and resolve conflicts peacefully. He values harmony and maintains a diplomatic approach when dealing with others. Julio is a good listener, offering a shoulder to lean on and providing support to his friends and family when they are going through tough times. Despite their contrasting personalities, Julio deeply cares for Kuroko and understands her struggles. He serves as a supportive cousin, providing a sense of stability and reminding her of the importance of acceptance and understanding. Julio's presence brings a sense of serenity to Kuroko's life, allowing her to find solace and acceptance within their family bond.
