"Squad 13 and I have lived under APE. After I learned about APE's ability to alter memories to keep their power, I was furious they did that to me and Zero Two. I refuse to let Squad 13 live like that anymore. NERV agrees to the process of preparing for the arrival of Squad 13. I have to get them out of that world. It's not optional. Rather, it is a necessary thing to do, because it is the right thing to do, after we are treated like disposable specimens. We must get my Squad 13 friends as far away from that place as possible." - Hiro

Hiro Kawashima (川島ヒロ, Hiro Kawashima) is the main protagonist of DARLING in the FRANXX. He is a former Parasite with the codename "016" and was once known as a prodigy among the Children. However, he failed to synchronize with his partner

Naomi and was considered nothing but a failure as a pilot. As a result, he did not know where he belonged and

struggled to find his place in the world. However, upon being partnered and piloting with Zero Two, he became an official Parasite and found a new reason to live. Hiro and Zero Two were the newest members of the 13th Plantation, piloting a FRANXX called Strelizia.

During Episode 15, he fell into a portal that took him to Tokyo-3. There, he meets the current commander of NERV, led by Misato. There, Hiro was unsure of what to do, but they assured him that everything will be fine. Rei asked Hiro if he wanted to complete his transformation process, since licking Zero Two's blood will eventually make him turn into the same hybrid as her. With nothing left to lose, Hiro accepted Rei's offer, which resulted him becoming a human klaxo sapiens hybrid in just a week.

Wanting to show the truth to Hiro, Mistato showed him the anime, such as when Zero Two got tortured with experiments. This made Hiro extremely angry, and all of his faith in APE crumbled in an instant. Hiro was growing resentful of what APE stands for and their treatment of children like him. Over the next several months at Tokyo-3, Hiro's personality returned to when he was a kid. His curiosity, free-spirited/rebellious nature came back with a vengeance. This caused him to rise rapidly in the ranks of NERV, becoming a lieutenant within a year. He also has aquired a laptop, and made friends with the Evangelion crew. At the same time, unwilling to let Squad 13 live under the eyes of APE, Hiro begins to plan a mass defection of Squad 13 with NERV and their relocation to Tokyo-3, a brand new world with freedom. A place without APE's iron fist, where they can rebuild and move on from APE. Hiro hopes that they will experience real freedom for the first time, as they have never known freedom.

Appearance[]

Hiro had an average build, height, and a standard "slim" male physique. He had black, shaggy hair and rich blue eyes. His checkered past had left him with an emphatic expression on his face. He was often seen in the standard Stamen Parasite uniform.

After his tranformation in Tokyo-3, Hiro gains blue horns and canines. When agitated, his eyes and horns glow blue, much like Zero Two. His eyes became luminescent, changing from a dark blue-green to bright blue. His irises also gained more blue hues and rings, and he also developed a blue eyeliner similar to that of Zero Two. He wears a uniform that is like Zero Two's except that his is a navy blue color.

Personality[]

As a child, Hiro was very jovial, optimistic, and hopeful, giving names to other kids and to himself as well. He taught the kids that names only given to themselves could give a sense of uniqueness when the only name they had was their codes. This earned him fame among other children, even those in other plantations. Because of this, he was chosen to represent the Children in the Garden. During his time at the Garden, Hiro was very curious about himself and the world around him. He would constantly ask himself questions and whenever he tried to ask the adults, they would never give him an answer. This, coupled with the fact that the other Children never took a stand with him and were very obedient, made Hiro frustrated and he felt like he was the only person fighting the world all by himself. This changed when he met Zero Two, to which Hiro realized that there were other people fighting the world by themselves. He was then shown to be tenacious and brave, as he didn't bother to wait to rescue Zero Two and broke her out of her room and helped her evade the authorities for a while all by himself. However, after getting caught, the authorities decided to erase both of their memories: Hiro's curiosity, free-spirited nature, and meeting with Zero Two were few of the reasons why.

After this, Hiro became less curious, joyful and creative, and more emphatic, serious and obedient. He also stopped naming children and was stripped off of some of the original aspects of his personality. Prior of his memory wipe, Hiro only wanted to pilot in as much as it would let him leave the Garden, but when this motivation was erased from his memory, piloting was all he remembered and his sole purpose for living.

Hiro, having discovered the truth of APE and their memory wipe on him and Zero Two by Rei showing the anime to him in Tokyo-3, was enraged after seeing what APE did to Zero Two in her childhood. He was further angered by the scene in which both of his memories and Zero Two's were erased. That was the last straw for him. He swore to never go back to APE ever again, and his original personality returned. Knowing what freedom feels like after living in Tokyo-3 for a year, Hiro begins to plan a mass defection of Squad 13 by getting Mistato to open the portal when it is ready. He didn't want to live under oppression ever again, and so didn't want the rest of his Squad 13 friends to live a life full of oppression under APE either.

Quotes[]

"There is no other choice, Mistato. They can't live there anymore. We can't live under APE. I can't go back there after knowing what it feels like to be free here. They think of us as nothing more than specimens to be used in an experiment. We must get them to Tokyo-3 as soon as possible. Make sure that APE never finds a way here from that Earth. I don't know how much time has passed over there, but we must try at least. Zero Two deserves a new home where she will be free." - Hiro when taking to Mistato about the plan for Squad 13 to defect.

"APE is a rotten origination to the core. Having the ability to erase memories from parasites is more than enough. I can't believe FranXX had the audacity to say that memories are noise! He took everything away from me as a child! I will never forgive him for what he did to me and Zero Two. He's better off dead!" - Hiro goes on a rant about APE.

"So, what happened after I got to Tokyo-3? Well, Asuka taught me about computers and how to build one. I made my own in my room using what was called a 'Ryzen' and a RTX. She got me into 'gaming', and I enjoy it. League of Legends, DOTA 2, and Minecraft are my main games. Parasites like us never had anything like this." - Hiro writing in his diary about what he did in the year coming to Tokyo-3.

"I...can never go back to APE ever again. Life in Tokyo-3 is much better. That 'Papa' is not a 'Papa' to humanity. He is utter scum, us being damn weapons of war, while the adults stay in their rooms and waste away. Why should we protect a world like that? Zero Two and I weren't even treated as humans there." - Hiro reflecting on his arrival.
