Rosario + Vampire (Seitenkan) is the gender-bent adaptation of Akihisa Ikeda's manga.

Characters[]

Tsuki Aono (Maaya Sakamoto (Japanese); Brittney Karbowski (English)): An average teenager who, unable to get into the local high schools, enrolls at Yokai Academy. She discovers it is a school for monsters, and must hide her human identity under punishment of death. However, because she befriends Mako Akashiya, an attractive vampire, she decides to stay. Over the course of the series, she makes new friends and protects them without a second thought. Most of her friends are boys who in turn compete for her affection. When infused with Mako's blood, she acquires extraordinary strength that allows her to defeat other monsters. The transfusions, however, take a toll on her human body and transform her into a ghoul, after which she is given a spirit lock to retain her humanity. In Season II, she trains and undergoes body alterations to become stronger and to control her vampiric power. She eventually is able to transform into a powerful vampire like Mako.

Mako Akashiya (Jun Fukuyama (Japanese); Vic Mignogna (English, Outer); Richard Epcar (English, Inner)): The vampire title character. He is highly regarded by his schoolmates for his handsomeness and academic ability. He enjoys biting and drinking blood from Tsuki's neck. When his rosario is removed from his necklace, he undergoes a personality change (along with a physical transformation sequence in the anime) to a ruthless, arrogant and skilled martial artist who easily beats opponents with powerful kicks. His catchphrase when exhibiting his inner personality is: "Know your place".

Kumaru Kurono (Takahiro Sakurai (Japanese); Matthew Mercer (English)): A bulky incubus student who originally plans to enslave all the girls at school with his kiss. Overshadowed by Mako's popularity, he targets Mako's object of affection, Tsuki, by using his charm ability but fails. After Mako defeats his, he falls in love with Tsuki because she shows his kindness, and pursues her exclusively as his Mate of Fate. Over the course of the series, he learns to value his friendship with Mako and the other boys when they help him out in situations. Because of this, he restrains himself from using his powers to his advantage on Tsuki, and tries to win her over fairly. In his incubus form, Kumaru has long fingernails that can cleanly slice through tree trunks, pointed ears and tail, and bat wings that enable him to fly and to carry people. He can cast high-level illusion spells, as well as enter people's dreams. Over the summer break, he and Mizo train in close-quarters combat, and develop joint attacks called Black and White Duets. In a later storyline, he reveals that incubus gain their power by loving others, and an incubus who cannot love will eventually die.

Yukinari Sendo (Rica Matsumoto (Japanese); Kate Higgins (English)): An 11-year-old genius wizard, complete with wizard hat and heart-shaped magic wand, with a "little brother" personality. He scores at the top of his class, but is ridiculed by his classmates for being "borderline", that is, between monster and human. He idolizes Mako, and initially hates Tsuki for garnering Mako's attention. However, after both Tsuki and Mako save her, he falls for Tsuki and dreams of a three-way relationship with them. Although she clashes with Kumaru and the other boys, he teams up with them on various adventures. Yukinari's abilities include manipulating flying tarot cards to slice through monster plants; and summoning a metal washtub to drop on a person's head or to clobber the person. In the second manga serialization, he develops magic items, summons creatures, and becomes close with Fangiona Huang.

Mizo Shirayuki (Isshin Chiba (Japanese); Keith Silverstein (English)): A snow fairy who joins Tsuki's class in the second term. He is typically seen with a lollipop in his mouth, which is actually a special coolant. In his first school term, he confesses his love to gym teacher Osaki Kotsubo, but when she takes advantage of him, he freezes her and gets suspended for the term. He obsesses over Tsuki because of her news articles, and stalks her regularly, eventually joining the Newspaper Club in his second year. Besides freezing people outright, Mizo can shape claws of ice from his hands, throw ice kunai (Japanese knives), and make ice dolls (fragile mobile copies) of himself and of others.

Rupert Tojo (Shigeru Chiba (Japanese); Kyle Hebert (English)): A wizard who serves as an antagonist in the Wizard's Knoll storyline, under his guardian Lordy Oyakata. His deep hatred for humans stems from a car accident by a human drunk driver that killed his parents, but after he experiences Tsuki's kindness, he has a change of heart. He appears at Yokai Academy to aid the headmistress, Tenko Mikogami, on a variety of roles. He later reveals masochistic tendencies when interacting with Tsuki. Rupert's magic theme typically involves ravens and flora, both as familiars and alternate forms for him to take.

In the anime, his backstory is different: his parents are not mentioned; Oyakata is already dead, but lives in his mind as a delusion. He carries out Oyakata's actions from the manga against Tsuki and the boys. In the second season, his various jobs become a running gag where he has a "long story" as to how he got involved.

Kouta Shuzen (Fujiko Takimoto (Japanese); Bryce Papenbrook (English)): Mako Akashiya's younger half-brother, and the youngest of the four Shuzen brothers; he becomes a student at Yokai Academy in the second manga serialization and anime season. He has a pet bat that can transform into a variety of weapons. As a child, Kouta regularly fought Mako, but always lost. Upset that Mako sealed his powers, Kouta enrolls in Yokai Academy to be with him, picking fights with him in order to draw out his inner personality. He also dislikes that his brother and the boys fawn over Tsuki, and refuses to be associated with the harem, although after they save him against the Karate Club, he joins the Newspaper Club. In the Season II epilogue bonus comics, she and Hanae Miyamoto officially go out, but their outings end up being non-romantic sparring sessions.

Gina Morioka (Yoko Hikasa (Japanese); Erica Mendez (English)): The president of the Newspaper Club, and a year senior to Tsuki. She delegates most of the work to Tsuki and the gang. She is good-looking and a lady charmer, although she is heavily perverted, which causes the Newspaper Club boys to keep their distance from him, as well as warn others of her behavior. Prior to the manga series, "Mad Dog" Morioka enjoys fighting and getting into trouble until the Newspaper Club president Son Otonashi defeats her. Her monster form is a werewolf. In the Season II epilogue bonus comics, she gets a job at Son's inn after graduation.
